MAHSOPA TO DIGITISE COPIES OF MALACCA HIGH "OPTIMIST"

MAHSOPA wants to archive and digitise ALL the copies of the Malacca High School Annual Magazine viz "The Optimist" into a CD.

"The Optimist" was first produced in early 1900's and over the years, it has become a record for the achievements and activities of the Malacca High School. Articles written by students were published in it as well.

Though the early copies of the "Optimist" are in hard copies and normally archived in the School library, it is important that these invaluable magazines are archived digitally for future generations. The value of these old copies will be immense as they record the school achievements, former students and activities within the school.

Due to the importance of these records, MAHSOPA has decided to carry out this project with co-operation with the School Management.

For alumni members of Malacca High School who intend to giveaway their copies of their "Optimists", kindly contact admin@mahsopa.net. MAHSOPA maybe interested to obtain them as some copies are missing.

Malacca High School celebrates 185th anniversary

MALACCA: With an illustrious history dating back to 1826, the iconic Malacca High School will be celebrating its 185th anniversary this weekend with an exciting line-up of games and activities for its past and present pupils and teachers.
The celebrations will kick off with the Games Carnival on Saturday and Sunday where students will pit their skills at cricket, hockey, netball, golf and football.

The cricket, netball and football matches will be held at the MHS Padang while the 6-a-side hockey tournament and the golf tournament will be held at the Bukit Serindit Hockey Stadium and the Ayer Keroh Country Club, respectively.

Past pupils and their families can also reminisce about their schooldays during a trip down memory lane at their alma mater on Sunday from 9am followed by a fellowship and nostalgic tuckshop fare at the MHS hall from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

The highlight of the celebrations is the 185th anniversary dinner specifically for former pupils and staff, their spouses and current employees of the school.

The dinner, priced at RM80 per person, will be held from 6pm to 11pm on Sunday at Hotel Equatorial Malacca. For details, call Dr Ee Tiang Lock at 06-282 0161/06-286 8146 or Aljan at 016-284 4684.

The Malacca High School, a premier school, is the second oldest school in the country. It is now a cluster school.

Founded on Dec 7, 1826, MHS was initially known as the Malacca Free School. Its name was changed to Malacca High School when the government took over its management from the Christian mission in 1878.

Some of MHS's prominent alumni include statesmen Tun Tan Cheng Lock and his son, Malaysia's first finance minister Tun Tan Siew Sin, former deputy governor of Bank Negara Malaysia and former managing director of Petronas Datuk Rastam Hadi, former chief secretary to the government Tun Abdullah Salleh, High Court Judge Tan Sri Lal Chand Vohrah who was also ad litem judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Shirley Geok-Lin Lim, a UCLA Professor of English, who chairs the School of Education of UCLA and winner of Commonwealth Poetry Prize and National Book Award.

While in PJ State this afternoon, I was fortunate enough to recognize my former MHS teacher. He is Mr Wong Kim Siong who taught Bahasa Malaysia and English in MHS in 1969-70.

He left to UK to pursue his higher degree, worked in Ministry of Education before retiring in 1993.

MAHSOPA 2011 Dinner was successfully held at Kelab Golf Negara SUBANG on Saturday, 7th May 2011. More than 200 former Malacca High pupils and their spouses graced this dinner.

Before the dinner, MAHSOPA held their Annual General Meeting and elected the new committee from 2011 onwards.

Checks begin on termite woes at MCKK

KUALA KANGSAR: The Education Ministry, Perak Works Department and Taiping Heritage Department yesterday inspected the termite-infested century-old Malay College Kuala Kangsar.

Several ministry and department officers were sent to check the condition of the school building and its safety, and to find solutions to save the landmark building.

The New Sunday Times reported that the school's Greco-Roman building and hostel -- fondly referred to as the Big School -- had been declared unsafe for habitation. The affected main block houses 10 dormitories.

The officers were seen walking together, taking notes and taking photographs accompanied by school head Anand Baharuddin.

However, they declined to comment on their findings after a three-hour inspection.

It was learnt the team was sent to verify the reports regarding the school's termite-infested condition, as highlighted by the New Sunday Times.

It is believed the officers found the problem not irredeemable and measures would be taken to repair the affected school buildings.

Perak Education and Higher Learning Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid said the state government had appealed for a RM1.5 million allocation from the ministry for MCKK to eradicate its termite infestation problem.

He advised parents not to worry as the school had taken the necessary precautions to ensure students' safety.

The iconic Big School and its hostel were closed since the start of the school year after termites damaged its wooden roofs, ceilings and floors.

The block was deemed unsafe for habitation and at least 100 students housed within five dormitories were evacuated to other hostel blocks.

Subsequent inspection by a pest control company revealed that almost the entire Big School, which has 21 dormitories accommodating about 500 students, was badly infested.

Even the school's iconic grand old raintree, fondly known as the Big Tree, appeared to be dying as a result of the termite attack.

The Big School building was officially declared a national heritage in March 2009.

MCKK, established in 1905, is a premier boarding school with a famous alumni that include Perak's ruler Sultan Azlan Shah and Umno founder the late Datuk Onn Jaafar.

The dormitories at Malay College Kuala Kangsar are empty and in a sorry state.

THE old boys are furious at what the termite-infested Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) has become. They cannot bear to see the heritage Big School building fall apart, as reported in this paper two days ago.

The anxiety is real. Even the swift response from Education director-general Datuk Abdul Ghafar Mahmud yesterday that the matter would be rectified immediately would do little to ease the exasperation.

Said one of the old boys, Federal Court judge Datuk Abdull Hamid Embong, a member of the school board, in a text message: "It is a heritage building and the government must save it. Historical significance too important to ignore. Even Queen Elizabeth and Emperor Hirohito visited it a few years ago. I wonder what they would say if they come to know that the Big School is left to rot, that our heritage has become a meal to the humble termites."

Another, Azizul Kallahan, executive chairman of communications consultants Spencer Azizul, called in to express his deepest concern about the state of affairs and said he would rally support to set things right.

Indeed, the alarm bells have sounded. First, it was the school's declining achievements. Now even the physical structure is crumbling away at MCKK.

And something must be done fast to save the century-old fully-residential school that has produced the cream of the country's who's who.

The Big School, the landmark hostel section that looks so majestic from the outside, is crumbling and creaky on the inside after being eaten away by termites.

It is now unoccupied, the students having been moved out of the dormitories for safety reasons.

This actually has made it worse because the desolation has turned the whole section into a horrible scene: an abandoned ghostly building waiting to fall to pieces.

News about the termite infestation has been around for a while and it was not until I saw the situation for myself that I realised how bad it was and how seriously the school has sunk.

This was last Tuesday when, together with four old boys from the Class of '71, I set out on a sentimental journey to Kuala Kangsar to see for myself the sad state of my alma mater.

No matter how jovial and upbeat T.K., Vic, Zin and Azhair have always been and no matter how many times they have visited MCKK the past two years, we couldn't hold back our tears when we saw the deterioration that had taken place, particularly at the Big School.

Some dormitories were empty and in a very sorry state. Parts of the ceiling and floorboards were rotting away, having been eaten by the pests.

What used to be Dorms 7 to 16 were dark and empty, with dust gathering all over the place. The balconies were unkempt and the Roman pillars very rough at the edges with signs of the termite trail. The common rooms and the sick bay on the lower floor were also not there anymore.

This was the place we grew up in and we stood there gasping at what had become of it.

No doubts at all, something has got to be done to save this heritage.

The reactions are understandable. Another old boy, Datuk Mohd Shukri Hussin, executive director of CIMB Group, said he found it hard to understand why the pest problem was not addressed earlier.

"Why must the matter come to a head like this until students had to be moved out?"

I also detected a lot of anger from retired diplomat Datuk Salim Has-him. Among other things, this was what he said in his email to me: "Read the story. Yes, alarming and heart-wrenching, its like your soul is gutted to the core. What happened to our Big School, perhaps, is not an isolated case. There are many other iconic buildings that could be in the same state of affairs.

"It is reflective of the national mind, to put it mildly, of how much such things are valued. That we do not possess the culture to recognise these national heritage is simply mindless. We continue to build new complexes and new symbols for the nation and yet neglect the ones that we already have. Where is the balance in our milieu of things?

"If the government is not able to consider providing the appropriate funds to restore the decaying buildings, perhaps the alumni would come forward to contribute to the restoration work. Mind you, it is not only the Big School which requires repairs, but generally the whole school complex is in such deplorable condition.

"When was your last visit to the school? I was there about eight months ago and decided to walk around the campus. Never mind that things have changed so much after 42 years but just imagine that the library is relocated at the far end of the school?

"I went to look for old school magazines and was told that none is available and all are pushed into what is called cabinets? I could not find any single magazine which I thought could remind me of the years I spent at that famous MCKK... what a shame."

I think he has said it all.

MALACCA: Former student and Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam has pledged to help the Malacca High School Old Boys Association (HSOBA) following plans by the education authorities here to acquire its clubhouse.

Mohd Ali, who studied at Malacca High School between 1961 and 1967, said he was unaware of the dispute between the school authorities and HSOBA over the use of the clubhouse.

“I will ask the Malacca Education Department for a full report on the matter as I was unaware that HSOBA members had been prevented from using their clubhouse,” he told reporters at his office in Ayer Keroh yesterday.

He added he would personally assist HSOBA, as best as he can, to resolve the issue over the proposed acquisition of the clubhouse.

“The state would be willing to offer them a place on Pulau Melaka.

“I am willing to help them raise the necessary funds through a fundraising dinner,” he said.

When contacted, HSOBA president Manual Gomez said he was glad that Mohd Ali, a HSOBA member, had agreed to look into their plight.

“I am happy that the Chief Minister has agreed to help us.

“We are not against the acquisition but worried that HSOBA would be left out in the streets without a proper clubhouse once it is acquired,“ he said.

He added that the Melaka Tengah Land Office had also agreed to defer the acquisition evaluation exercise fixed on Jan 18 to Feb 9 following an appeal by HSOBA.

Malacca High School, the second oldest school in Malaysia, was established in 1826.

HSOBA, which has 18,000 members, was formed in 1921 with MCA founder Tun Tan Cheng Lock, a former student, appointed its first president.

Problems arose between HSOBA and the school authorities in 2006 when members had difficulty using the clubhouse which is located within the school.

MAHSOPA MELAKA NIGHT CRUISE

The above Melaka Night Cruise was held in Melaka on 20th. November 2010 with minimum participation from members and non-members of MAHSOPA.

On the committee level, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman and wife together with their domestic helper attended while the cruise co-ordinator, Kang and wife graced the event.

A Malacca-based Malacca High School former pupil, Mr. Ong together with his wife and son, supported the event. They met Mr. Kang and wife at the Aldy Hotel Bistro at about 7.00pm

Despite the lack of participants, our small group boarded the cruise boats at about 8.30pm with other visitors from various parts of Malaysia. Being the year end school holidays, the cruise was well patronised.

The night cruise began up the Melaka river by passing through the Stadthuys area, Riverside, Chan Koon Cheng bridge and Kampung Pantai. It continued onto Kampung Jawa, old central market and the newly constructed Hang Tuah bridge near to the former Cathay cinema.

After passing Hang Tuah bridge, it goes up river into Kampung Morten, Majestic Hotel and reached Taman Rempah before turning back to the river mouth.

Overall, it was a pleasant journey and the full moon lit up the night sky. The lights and murals including the water fountain at Dataran Munshi Abdullah at the end of Jalan Pasar Baru were some highlights of the Melaka River Night Cruise.

It was a pity that more members and their families were not keen to take part in this outing.

MALAYSIAN TAX TALK CANCELLED

The planned talk on "Malaysian Tax" on this coming Saturday morning on 27th. November 2010, has been cancelled.

The lack of response from members in confirming their attendances was the primary reason for canceling this T-talk.

Poh Chye, an alumnus of MHS, heads the TAMS (Tax Advisory and Management Services Sdn Bhd) and its group of companies. He has been the executive director of TAMS since its incorporation in 1983. Prior to this, he served in the Inland Revenue Department for 11 years and his last post was Senior Assistant Director in the International Tax Division.
Poh Chye is also an adjunct professor of Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is a member of the International Fiscal Association (IFA) and also a member of Company Practice Group of MAICSA. Possessing 30 years of experience in Malaysia taxation, he is a practising Tax Consultant and is still actively conducting seminars on taxation and investments in Malaysia.

MALACCA: It was a close call for some students of the 184-year-old Malacca High School when the roof of its library came crashing down.
Although no injuries were reported during the incident early yesterday morning as the usually packed library is closed on weekends, there were students and teachers busy celebrating Canteen Day and attending the school’s Parents and Teachers Association meeting at the country’s second oldest school.
The incident is believed to have happened sometime between Friday night and before dawn yesterday and the damage was discovered at 8am by a general worker.
State education, science and technology committee chairman Datuk Yaakub Md Amin said the affected section of the building would be closed temporarily to allow the state public works department to assess the extent of damage and repair costs.

“We will seal off not only the library but also the teachers and staff rooms located within the same building.
“There is a danger the entire roof may collapse as the timber rafters are affected by wood rot due to termite infestation and moisture following the recent wet spell,” he said.
He added that signs of wood rot were spotted a day earlier by the school authorities who immediately alerted state education officials.
The school is more than 180 years old but the single-storey structure where the library is housed was constructed in the 1940s.
The last major renovation done to this section of the building was carried out in 1971, he said.
He said repairs would cost about RM100,000 and would be carried out during the school break in September to allow the library to be opened for the new session next year.
Meanwhile, state MCA chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo, who was invited to open the school’s PTA meeting, said it was fortunate that no injuries were reported in the incident.
Gan, who is also state public works committee chairman, said he would instruct state public works department to carry out safety inspections of old buildings at several schools in the city.

The contract price of the building of the Hall is MYR 569,500.00. The Association has raised RM 143,565.00 in 1978 and 1979.

The Hall consists basically of three sections – the lobby, Assembly area and the stage. The lobby area consists of ground and first floor and an upper projector room.

The stage is raised with changing rooms on the upper floor on both sides of thestage The whole Hall is raised by two feet to avoid the flood level. The Hall will have six badminton courts. The seating capacity of the Hall is slightly over 900 pupils and standing space up to 2,000 pupils.

Total built up area of the Hall is 16,674 sq. ft. The Hall itself is 7,600 sq ft. The stage is 2,520 sq. ft.

Tan Sri Hasmy Agam named Suhakam chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak tonight announced the appointment of new members of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) with Tan Sri Hasmy Agam becoming the new chairman.

He is the executive chairman of the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR), which is under the Foreign Ministry.

The former chairman of Suhakam was Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman.

The members of the commission are Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah, Professor Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee, James Deva Nayagam, Professor Datuk Dr Mahmood Zuhdi A. Majid, Jannie Lasimbang and Detta anak Samen.

In a press statement to Bernama, Najib said that under sub-section 5(2) of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission Act 1999, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to the appointment of the new Suhakam members for a three-year period.

The prime minister said the appointment took effect from April 26.

“In line with sub-section 6(1) Act 597, Yang di-Pertuan Agong has given his consent to the appointment of Tan Sri Hasmy Agam as the Suhakam chairman,” he added. — Bernama

On 1st. February 2010, MAHSOPA organised a Flower Farm Visit in Semenyih, Selangor. The Flower Farm is the largest lowland flower farm in South East Asia and it is owned by Dato' Halim, a former pupil of Malacca High.

Through his good offices, members of MAHSOPA and their family members visited the farm and were entertained to a sumptuous Kajang Satay lunch in the farm. Besides the lunch and farm briefing, our members left home with pots of flowers given to us with compliments of Dato' Halim.

Welcome to our MAHSOPA Website Portal.

MAHSOPA was founded in 1976 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by a group of former Malacca High School students who resided in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

In order to re-connect with other former students of Malacca High School in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and in the State of Selangor, MAHSOPA in short or Malacca High School Old Pupils Association in the Federal Territory/Selangor, was established.

Over the years, MAHSOPA has organised events to bring together former pupils to meet up and relive their days in Malacca High School.

Besides organising Annual Dinners, Book launches, Get-togethers and outings, MAHSOPA raised funds for our Alma Mater, contributed money for poor students in need of food vouchers and provided scholarships to deserving Malacca High students.

To date, MAHSOPA has more than 350 life members and MAHSOPA wants to recruit more Life members.
